Chair's Message: Darrian A. Denman, Esq.
As Chair of the Young Lawyers Division it is my privilege to welcome our members, (old, new, and prospective) to what promises to be another great bar year! The YLD Executive Board is committed to providing quality programming and events to meet our members’ professional development needs. In keeping with YLD’s theme for the 2013-2014 bar year, “Lift while you climb,” YLD will also continue to encourage and provide opportunities for its membership to serve as mentors in the local community and for other lawyers and law students.
What YLD is Doing?
YLD has co-sponsored several events over the summer. Most recently, YLD co-sponsored the panel discussion “Toward a More Perfect Union: Race & Democracy in America”. The program was hosted by Shiloh Baptist Church on August 6, 2013. The panel included Elaine Jones Director-Counsel Emeritus of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund; Eddie Glaude, Jr., Chair of the Center for African-American Studies and Professor of Religion at Princeton University; Angela Rye, the founder and director of IMPACT; Ronald Sullivan, Jr. Professor of Law and Director of Harvard Law School's Criminal Justice Institute; and Clinton Yates, a local columnist for the Washington Post.
The discussion focused on a range of topics from stand your ground laws to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Voting Rights Act. The panelists offered these tips to community members looking for ways to get involved:
1. Write your representatives.
2. Register people to vote and help educate them on relevant issues.
3. Do not ignore smaller elections. Go vote!
Additionally, on August 24, 2013, YLD participated in the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. Information about other upcoming events will be posted soon.
Congratulations are in Order!
YLD would like to congratulate several of its members for their recent achievements!
Earlier this summer, Jason A. Grant and I were named to Lawyers of Color's Inaugural Hot List, which recognizes early- to mid-career attorneys under 40 who are excelling in the legal profession.
In July, YLD Vice-Chair David L. Morrow was named the National Bar Association’s Junius W. Williams Young Lawyer of the Year. (Read More Here)
We encourage all of our members to share their professional achievements with us by sending us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
